The Dergaon Town Committee was established in the year 1960 consisting of 4(four) nos ward. The then the Dergaon Town was under the Golaghat Sub-Division of Sivsagar District. First Board Meeting: The 1st Board meeting of DTC was held on 07-03-1960 at Dergaon Town Club Bhavan.

On 05-02-2004 the Dergaon Town Committee was upgraded to Dergaon Municipal Board Vide Govt notification No UDD(M)298/2003/10 dated 28-01-2003. The Dergaon Municipal Board consist of 10 nos ward. The first Chairman of the Dergaon Municipal Board was Sri. Ramavater Jallan.

Dergaon is located at 26.7°N 93.97°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 82 metres (269 feet). Dergaon is very well connected by roadways to all the places of Assam. The National Highway 37 passes through Dergaon. Baruah Bamun Gaon railway station is the closest railway station of Dergaon. The nearest airport is Rowriah Airport which is at Jorhat town.

Dergaon is a Municipal Board city in district of Golaghat, Assam. The Dergaon city is divided into 10 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Dergaon Municipal Board has population of 20,059 of which 10,119 are males while 9,940 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.

Current estimated population of Dergaon Municipal Board in 2023 is approximately 27,500. The schedule census of 2021 for Dergaon city is postponed due to covid.
